Kayaking Classes
All courses taught by Joanne Thun, ACA-Certified Instructor.Intro to Kayaking & Paddle Technique
Become familiar with the basics of the equipment before you get in the water! You’ll learn the different paddling strokes, along with how to control, stop, and brace your boat. Kayaks may be rented for $10 each - to be paid AT CLASS. Please let us know in advance if you will need one. Our instructor has been successfully teaching people of all ages and abilities for a number of years.

Kayak Safety and Rescue
Learn how to put together your own water safety kit, how to use a safety rope to tow others and to be towed. Each person will be encouraged to make a “wet exit” in this controlled environment. Kayaks may be rented for $10 each, which will be paid at class. Please let us know if you will be renting one. This class is a prerequisite for any of the river trips.

Advanced Kayaking - Eskimo Rolling
Learn how to bring your kayak upright after becoming inverted in the water. Class is intentionally small to maximize instructor supervision.
6 hours. Wednesdays, July 18 - August 1; or August 15 - 29; 5:30-7:30p.Tuition: $89.
Missouri River Day Trip
An introduction to moving flat water. There is a minimum of 5 and maximum of 9, so reserve your spot early! Students must have taken the Safety and Rescue class before going on the Missouri.
Approximately 6 hours. Saturday, June 30, July 28, or August 18; 10am start (subject to change).Tuition: $43 + kayak
Blackfoot River Trip
Introduction to whitewater. You will encounter some mild to moderate rapids. Students must have traveled with the instructor on a previous river trip in order to participate. THis trip takes a minimum of 5 and maximum of 8 travelers.
Approximately 7-8 hours. Saturday, July 14 or August 25; 9am start (subject to change).Tuition: $55 + kayak
All kayaking classes are held "sprinkle or shine" - classes may be postponed for lightning, but not for cold or heat. Bring appropriate clothing for any of Montana's weather possibilities.
Wilderness Survival in the Field
Put what you learn to the test in this overnight survival course. After walking into the forest and learning the essential skills of tool use and fire making, we will establish a base camp and spend the remainder of the workshop practicing and living what we are learning. You'll construct and spend the night in your own shelter.
Tents, sleeping bags, modern stoves and similar equipment is not permitted. Upon registration, your instructor will send you more information - including a gear list. You'll provide your own food for the course. Participants under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult. High quality Mora knives will be available from the instructor for $15 each. Introduction to Bushcraft
This course will emphasize the longer-term, wilderness living skills of bushcraft. Skills covered will include tool use; natural crafting; shelter construction; knots and lashings; and ethnobotany. This overnight course will take place on the Helena National Forest. You will walk away from this course with several useful objects you made yourself.
Bring a sleeping bag if you prefer, or go with more traditional sleeping options.You'll provide your own food and cooking equipment. A gear list will be sent upon registration.
